Sayegh Says Sanctioned Politicians’ Criticism Validates Army Chief’s Leadership

Kataeb MP Salim Sayegh expressed staunch support for the Lebanese Army, criticizing political forces that have repeatedly undermined the military's pivotal role.

“Hands off the Lebanese Army!” Sayegh wrote in a post on his X account, emphasizing the indispensable role the military has played in preserving Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability.

“You all owe your existence to it [army]. Without it, you wouldn't even be here!” Sayegh stressed. “Without its performance, it would have ended up like the regime’s army in Syria. Without the wisdom of its leader, the country would have been dragged into your power-driven wars.”

Sayegh held Lebanon’s political establishment accountable for the army’s challenges, accusing them of blocking efforts by Saudi Arabia and France to provide weapons and financial support, leaving the army to fend for itself amidst mounting pressures.

"You are the ones who prevented its armament by Saudi Arabia and France, and you bear responsibility for leaving it without any material support to endure and persist. You are the ones who have enabled and continue to enable the actions of armed groups circumventing international resolutions."

He also criticized these factions for shielding armed groups that circumvent international resolutions, warning that such actions compromise Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability.

Sayegh dismissed recent criticism campaign targeting Army Commander General Joseph Aoun, lauding the latter for his steadfastness and integrity.

"Criticism of the Army Commander’s performance by politicians sanctioned internationally is, in fact, a badge of honor for him. His pride lies in not yielding to those who promised and led us to the brink of hell. His victory lies in not compromising as you did during the Fajr al-Joroud battle. His glory lies in not abandoning the land that gives rise to all leadership and authority!"

Sayegh concluded by emphasizing the broader significance of the Lebanese Army as a unifying institution.

“We take pride in the performance of General Joseph Aoun, the unity of the army, and the national consensus around it,” he said.
