Aoun Condemns Israeli Strikes, Says Global Appeals for De-escalation Are Being Ignored

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Friday condemned a series of Israeli airstrikes that struck the southern regions of Nabatiyeh and Iqlim al-Tuffah, denouncing the attacks as a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and a breach of the November 2024 ceasefire agreement between the two countries.

Aoun said the Israeli military’s targeting of civilian areas and populated neighborhoods constituted a blatant disregard for international law and repeated regional appeals to halt the violence.

“Israel continues to blatantly disregard regional and international calls to end violence and de-escalate tensions in the region,” Aoun said in a statement released by the presidency. “This necessitates a firm response from the international community to put an end to these attacks, which undermine ongoing efforts to stabilize Lebanon and the broader region.”

The president's comments followed an escalation in Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon, where fighter jets carried out multiple airstrikes, including one that struck an apartment building in Nabatiyeh. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that a woman was killed and at least 11 others were wounded in that incident, which local media speculated may have been an attempted assassination.

Earlier on Friday, the Israeli military said it had targeted what it described as a Hezbollah site in the Jabal Ali al-Taher area. According to Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee, the facility was previously rendered inoperative in an earlier strike but had recently shown signs of reconstruction. He said Israel would not tolerate Hezbollah’s attempts to rebuild its military infrastructure, calling it a “blatant violation” of understandings with Lebanon..
