Sayegh: Armed Groups in Lebanon Must Adhere to State Terms, Not Dictate Presidential Election

Kataeb MP Salim Sayegh called on armed groups in Lebanon to respect the State's authority and adhere to both national and international legitimacy, instead of pushing for the election of a president who aligns with their own conditions.

"What is required from the armed groups in Lebanon is to abide by the State's governance framework and respect national and international legitimacy, not to impose a president who conforms to their demands," Sayegh wrote in a post on his X account.

Sayegh stressed that Lebanon’s political life must be governed by the principles of the State and the rule of law. He argued that the country's stability in the future depends on a political process that upholds national sovereignty, rather than being driven by non-state actors.

The lawmaker also addressed the role of the international community in Lebanon’s crisis, stating that countries wishing to assist Lebanon should focus on supporting efforts to restore the State’s functioning and ensure its legitimacy.

"Those who want to help Lebanon should focus on respecting the conditions necessary for the revival of the State, rather than repeating the mistakes of the past," he concluded.
