Kataeb: Any Effort to Ease the Election of President Requires Meeting the Opposition Halfway

The Kataeb Party’s Political Bureau held its weekly meeting chaired by Kataeb Leader MP Samy Gemayel. After the meeting, the following statement was issued:

1- Lebanon is bearing the cost of the tug-of-war unfolding behind the scenes of negotiations, which comes with a hefty price tag for the country. The most dangerous aspect is that the solutions do not take into account its sovereignty and independence, nor the issue of Hezbollah's illegal arms, indicating that Lebanon may go where there is no state, and where an armed militia unilaterally monopolizes decisions and drags it into battles against the will of the people.

2-The Kataeb Political Bureau considers that any effort aimed at facilitating the election of a President must be accompanied by a goodwill gesture from the party that practices a policy of dictation, coercion, and buying time to push through the election of its candidate. It should declare its genuine openness prior to any consultations on moderate candidates and nominate multiple figures to enforce the Constitution without obstructing the quorum. In doing so, it would meet the opposition, which extended its hand out of concern for the country and its institutions. At that point, all initiatives become serious and open to discussion, providing a viable means to break free from the current deadlock.

The Kataeb Political Bureau believes that it is the duty of the MPs to exercise their constitutional duties in electing the head of state and reinstating the authority to enable the state to function.

3-The Kataeb Political Bureau rejects the narrative propagated by the Syrian regime regarding the British watchtowers, which were established with the approval of the Lebanese Army which is the sole authority empowered to oversee their role in border control. The Syrian regime has always sought to keep the borders porous to allow the passage of weapons, explosives, and all forms of illicit activities.

These towers have proven that border control does not require complex security systems; rather, simple resources and free will are sufficient to safeguard sovereignty.

Prior to the meeting, by-elections were held to fill the vacancy resulting from the passing of the late comrade Majid Al Ayli, a member of the Kataeb Political Bureau.

Consequently, Comrade Mounir Al-Deek was elected as a new member of the Kataeb Political Bureau.
