U.S. Gives Lebanon One-Month Ultimatum to Disarm Militias or Face Chapter VII

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to the Lebanese government, setting a one-month deadline for the Lebanese Army to disarm militias operating within the country, Al-Liwaa newspaper reported.

The primary target of this action is Hezbollah, the powerful political and military faction that has long held sway in Lebanon, alongside Palestinian weapons that are reportedly uncontrolled within the refugee camps.

According to sources, the Trump administration has made it clear that failure to implement the necessary measures will have serious consequences. If Lebanon does not take decisive action to deploy its army and dismantle these militias, the country will be placed under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter which could authorize international intervention to ensure the implementation of UN resolutions, specifically Resolutions 1701 and 1559, which mandate the disarmament of militias and the extension of the Lebanese State's authority over its entire territory.

This provision allows for military and non-military interventions if a country is found to be a threat to international peace and security. It grants the UN Security Council the authority to take a range of measures, from diplomatic sanctions to military intervention, to restore peace and order in situations where peace is at risk. The chapter includes provisions for the use of force if necessary, which may involve military operations conducted by member states or peacekeeping forces.
