The United States Embassy in Lebanon announced on Thursday that the US Agency for International Development would provide $64 million “to help feed vulnerable people in Lebanon.”
Here’s what we know:
• The emergency food assistance provides $64 million in aid through the World Food Program targeting over 740,000 people to whom “rice, chickpeas, pasta, lentils and other non-perishable items, in addition to vouchers for purchasing food staples from local markets” would be provided.
• The embassy’s statement said the aid comes amid risks that “increasing prices of staple foods and fuel in Lebanon will worsen food insecurity” citing the multiple crises affecting the country, adding that the “situation is exacerbated by Putin’s war against Ukraine due to Lebanon’s reliance on imported wheat, primarily from Ukraine.” The US has provided $510 million in assistance to Lebanon since October 2020.
