Israel Launches Airstrikes Across Lebanon Following Cross-Border Rocket Fire

Israel launched a series of airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon on Saturday, following rocket fire from Lebanese territory that struck the northern Israeli town of Metula.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz instructed the army to carry out strikes on "dozens of terror targets" in response to the morning attack, according to statements from their offices.

"The Lebanese government is responsible for everything happening on its territory. Israel will not allow any harm to its citizens and sovereignty and will work in every way to ensure the security of Israeli citizens and the northern communities. The Israeli army is prepared and ready for any command," the statement read.

"We expect Lebanon to uphold its part of the agreement," Ophir Falk, foreign policy adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told Reuters. "The Israeli army will take all necessary measures to enforce the ceasefire and ensure our civilians can return home safely and securely."

Later, the Israeli military confirmed it had begun launching airstrikes on several targets in southern Lebanon, adding that it targeted dozens of Hezbollah rocket launchers and a command center used by the group in southern Lebanon.

Two people were killed and eight wounded by Israeli airstrikes in the south near the border, Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) said, citing Lebanon's health ministry toll.

Later in the day, the Israeli military reported launching a second wave of strikes, claiming they targeted Hezbollah positions. Netanyahu and Katz reportedly directed the Israeli army to conduct additional airstrikes on Hezbollah sites in Lebanon.

According to a statement from Katz’s office, he and Netanyahu instructed the military to hit multiple Hezbollah targets in retaliation for the rocket attacks earlier in the day. Lebanese media outlets reported strikes in southern Lebanon near the coastal city of Tyre, as well as in the eastern Bekaa Valley and the Hermel region in the north.

According to the Israeli army, the second wave of strikes targeted Hezbollah command centers, infrastructure, operatives, rocket launchers, and a weapons depot.

80 airstrikes were carried out throughout the day, it added.

One man was killed and seven others were injured in the Israeli strike on Tyre, as per Lebanon's Health Ministry. Five people were also injured in another Israeli strike on Hermel.
