Trump Set to Renew “Maximum Pressure” Campaign on Iran, Report Says

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump intends to ramp up sanctions on Iran substantially once he returns to the White House, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal.

Trump’s plan reportedly targets Iran’s oil industry as a primary focus, with the goal of building on the sweeping sanctions his administration imposed during his previous term from 2016 to 2020.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated that Trump aims to isolate Tehran both diplomatically and financially, viewing severe sanctions as a tool to pressure Iran into limiting its regional influence. The strategy, the source noted, includes an emphasis on cutting off Iran's access to international markets, further restricting the country’s oil exports.

The planned measures would likely take into account an assessment that Iran might seek retribution for the 2020 assassination of General Qasem Soleimani, the former head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). According to the source, this assessment could influence the scope and intensity of the sanctions.

If enacted, the sanctions would mark a return to Trump’s “maximum pressure” policy on Iran, a hallmark of his foreign policy aimed at limiting Iran’s ability to fund regional proxies and other military activities.
