Igor Grechushkin, the owner of the Rhosus cargo ship at the center of the Beirut port explosion investigation, has refused to testify before Lebanon’s lead judicial investigator while in detention in Bulgaria, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency.
The agency reported that Grechushkin declined to provide any statement to Judge Tarek Bitar, the judicial investigator leading the probe into the August 4, 2020 blast, and did not answer any questions during the attempted hearing.
Judge Bitar, who traveled to Bulgaria to question the suspect is expected to return to Beirut on Friday, the agency said.
The Moldovan-flagged Rhosus was carrying a large quantity of ammonium nitrate that was offloaded and stored at the Port of Beirut years before the massive explosion that devastated large parts of the Lebanese capital, killed more than 200 people and injured thousands.
