Source: Lebanon to Begin Disarmament of Palestinian Refugee Camps in June

Lebanon has laid out concrete plans to initiate the disarmament of Palestinian refugee camps, with the process expected to begin in June, according to a government source who spoke to Al-Hadath.

The Lebanese and Palestinian sides have agreed “on starting an implementation plan to remove weapons from the camps, beginning mid-June in the Beirut camps, and other camps will follow,” a source also told AFP.

The announcement follows recent talks between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Lebanese officials, during which Abbas reaffirmed his full support for Lebanese state sovereignty and the Lebanese military’s authority over the refugee camps. He emphasized that armed groups operating outside state control not only threaten Lebanon’s stability but also undermine the Palestinian cause.

As a direct result of these discussions, a joint Lebanese-Palestinian committee has been formed to oversee the implementation of the disarmament measures.

The committee held its first meeting on Friday to kick off coordination efforts. During the meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, participants agreed to launch a process for the disarmament of weapons according to a specific timetable, as well as to take steps to enhance the economic and social rights of Palestinian refugees.
