Iranian diplomats have been using foreign airlines to transfer cash to Hezbollah, circumventing Israeli monitoring of Iranian carriers, Sky News Arabia revealed, citing Western intelligence sources.
According to Nidal Kanaaneh, Israeli Affairs Editor at Sky News Arabia, Hezbollah's financial troubles have deepened as "Iranian funding via Syria has been disrupted, leaving the group in urgent need of alternative financing."
In response, Tehran has reportedly adopted a new strategy. According to the sources, Iranian diplomats are now transporting cash on commercial flights operated by foreign airlines.
"Due to close monitoring of planes arriving directly from Iran to Beirut, Tehran has begun routing funds through third countries in the region before reaching Lebanon," one source said.
Diplomats reportedly board these flights carrying suitcases stuffed with cash, bypassing conventional banking channels and evading scrutiny.
The militant group’s funding mechanisms have come under increased examination, particularly amid the ongoing conflict with Israel. Lebanese authorities recently searched an Iranian commercial plane at Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport after receiving intelligence that it might be used to funnel money to Hezbollah.
Mahan Air, an Iranian airline under U.S. sanctions since 2011 over its ties to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, is believed to play a key role in facilitating these transfers.
