Quintet Ambassadors Convene with Berri and Al-Rahi

The ambassadors representing the five-nation group for Lebanon, comprising the U.S., France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt, held meetings on Monday with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi.

Berri described the meeting as positive, expressing agreement on the necessity of reaching an understanding and electing a president. Egyptian Ambassador Alaa Moussa echoed Berri's sentiment, expressing optimism and highlighting Berri's receptiveness to their ideas.

Moussa emphasized the significance of the ambassadors' meeting with al-Rahi, noting discussions on upcoming steps towards electing a president based on a proposed roadmap.

The ambassadors' efforts align with an initiative launched by the National Moderation parliamentary bloc in February, aiming for consultations in Parliament followed by open electoral sessions.

According to Moussa, the quintet's endeavors could benefit from the National Moderation bloc's initiative, potentially facilitating consensus-building.

Additionally, the ambassadors are scheduled to meet with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, as reported by Asharq al-Awsat newspaper.

While there are no specific candidates under consideration by the five-nation group, discussions revolve around commitments rather than individual names, according to Moussa.

During the meetings, al-Rahi emphasized the importance of adhering to the constitution for electing a president, describing it as essential for the democratic process, as per sources from Bkerki.

Lebanon has been in a presidential vacancy since October 2022, with political factions unable to secure the required majority for election. The international community and the five-nation group continue to urge Lebanese leaders to resolve the political deadlock and address the country's financial crisis.
