Justice Minister Adel Nassar on Sunday emphasized the critical role of elections in reinforcing Lebanon’s democratic system and preserving the foundations of the Republic, calling them “a cornerstone of democratic life.”
“Elections are not just a formality. They are the backbone of our democracy,” Nassar said in an interview with Télé Liban. “The public prosecution offices are fully prepared to fulfill their duties in this regard
Nassar commended the Ministry of Interior, hailing what he described as its “tremendous efforts” to organize and implement the ongoing municipal and mayoral elections.
Addressing speculation about a potential delay of municipal elections in the capital, Nassar was unequivocal as he assured that “there will be no postponement of the vote in Beirut.”
Turning to the broader question of electoral reform, Nassar called for a renewed push toward decentralization as a means of modernizing Lebanon’s political framework, revitalizing governance model, and ensuring more equitable development nationwide.
“We must move forward with expanded decentralization,” he said. “Blocking the approval of a new electoral law only hinders progress. This reform is key to jumpstarting development across the country.”
