Marking the 80th anniversary of the Lebanese Army, Commander General Rodolphe Haykal issued a stirring address to troops on Wednesday, hailing eight decades of sacrifice while urging vigilance amid regional volatility and Israeli aggression.

“With one heart beating with faith, hope, and pride, we celebrate the Army’s 80th anniversary; a milestone of exceptional importance as our region faces persistent turmoil,” Haykal said in his Army Day message. “Today, we remember the dedication and sacrifices of our soldiers, who have shed their blood in loyalty to one cause only: Lebanon.”

In a message laced with historical reflection and urgent calls to action, Haykal warned that Lebanon faces an overlapping set of threats, including continued Israeli violations, terrorism, and the domestic repercussions of wider regional unrest.

"Israel persists in its violations of international resolutions and aims to infiltrate our social fabric," he said, describing the Israeli threat as Lebanon’s most pressing challenge. "This is followed by the danger posed by terrorism, which seeks to undermine national unity and the safety of our people."

Haykal emphasized the importance of safeguarding national cohesion in the face of political and security threats, calling on all parties to demonstrate “awareness and responsibility” to steer the country through what he described as a “delicate phase.”

Despite limited resources and deteriorating economic conditions, Haykal assured that the Lebanese Army continues to carry out its full spectrum of duties, including asserting the state’s authority across its territory, enforcing UN Resolution 1701 in partnership with the UN peacekeeping force (UNIFIL), securing borders, combating organized crime, and assisting citizens through development and relief operations.

“These circumstances demand that we enhance the Army’s capabilities,” he said, calling for expanded cooperation with “brotherly and friendly nations” to strengthen the institution and enable it to face its mounting responsibilities.

Haykal issued a firm warning against attempts to stir unrest or drag the country into new conflict.

"The Army will not tolerate any effort to compromise civil peace or plunge the nation into strife," he said. "It remains the guarantor of all Lebanese, committed to their unity, cohesion, and solidarity within the framework of the state's institutions."

In a personal note to the troops, Haykal acknowledged the hardships facing military personnel in both their professional and personal lives.

“I fully recognize the difficulties each of you faces,” he said. “But I look at you with pride and appreciation. I see in you the embodiment of honor and unwavering dedication.”

The Army leadership, he assured, is working “tirelessly” to secure rights and improve conditions for its members. He also called on the state to provide the necessary support to ensure the Army’s development and sustainability.

“The strength and stability of the state depend on the strength of the Army,” Haykal said. “The Army’s strength is rooted in your unity and morale.”

He concluded by urging soldiers to “continue to serve with resolve,” and to defend their country with unwavering commitment.

“Give your all to protect our people and land, and in doing so, uphold the values of honor, sacrifice, and loyalty,” he said.
