Kataeb Warns Against Undermining National Consensus on Foreign Policy, Urges State to Reassert Sovereignty

The Kataeb's Political Bureau, chaired by party leader Samy Gemayel, held its weekly meeting to review the latest regional and international developments and their repercussions on Lebanon, in addition to addressing domestic financial and reform-related matters. Following the meeting, the party issued the following statement:

1. The Kataeb Party welcomes the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel, calling on both sides to abide by and fully implement it. The party believes this truce should serve as a gateway toward a comprehensive resolution that puts an end to regional conflicts and leads to the dismantling of all Iranian-backed armed groups. The region, the Political Bureau stresses, has endured enough wars and must now enter a new era of peace, stability, and prosperity;

The party also condemns Iran’s recent attack on the State of Qatar, an actor that has long played a mediating role in regional conflicts and has contributed significantly to reconstruction efforts in Lebanon, particularly through its support of Lebanese state institutions, chief among them the Lebanese Army.

The Kataeb Political Bureau expresses concern over the ongoing public statements by Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem, which run counter to Lebanon’s official stance. The party considers such statements as a blatant attempt to bypass national consensus that rejects dragging Lebanon into conflicts it neither seeks nor can withstand. The party calls on the Lebanese state to firmly assert its authority and decisively confront any attempt to usurp its power or imply the existence of independent decision-making apart from the state.

The Political Bureau believes that the recent regional escalation underscores the urgency of restricting all arms to Lebanon's legitimate armed forces. This is the only guarantee that the Lebanese state alone can enforce sovereign policies in the realms of foreign affairs and national security.

The party renews its call for Lebanon to adopt a policy of positive neutrality in regional affairs and urges the government to pursue the necessary legal and diplomatic steps to formally anchor that neutrality in national policy.

2. Domestically, the Political Bureau reiterates its demand for the swift and simultaneous implementation of long-overdue reforms across all sectors.

In this context, it stresses the urgent need for financial audits of public administrations and a thorough assessment of staffing levels and needs within state institutions. These steps are essential to ensure that the next state budget is reform-oriented and  does not simply reproduce or entrench the flawed practices of the past.

3. Turning to regional security, the Kataeb Party strongly condemns the terrorist attack that targeted worshippers at the Saint Elias Church in Damascus. It considers this a critical test for the new leadership in Syria to prove its credibility and capacity to protect Syrians of all faiths and communities.

The Syrian authorities must shoulder full responsibility, hold the perpetrators accountable, prosecute those inciting violence, and impose the harshest penalties on them.
