Kataeb Political Bureau Sees Presidential Election as Critical Step Toward a Strong Lebanon

The Kataeb Political Bureau held its weekly meeting under the chairmanship of Party President Samy Gemayel to address the latest political and security developments. After thorough discussions, the following statement was issued:

1. The Political Bureau expresses deep concern over the fagility of the current ceasefire agreement, stressing the urgent need for all parties to fully comply with its provisions, in order to spare Lebanon the devastation of yet another war. This pivotal period, the Bureau notes, presents an opportunity to establish lasting security and stability, paving the way for building a functional state.

In this context, the Kataeb Party regards the upcoming presidential election session as a matter of paramount importance. It emphasizes the necessity of collaborating with all concerned parties to elect a president with a national vision, free from the divisive dynamics of the past. Such leadership must serve as a cornerstone for rebuilding a strong, stable, and prosperous Lebanon—one devoid of illegal arms, committed to safeguarding its citizens, and fostering progress and well-being.

2. The Bureau is closely monitoring the escalating security developments in Syria, particularly the alarming reports of Hezbollah deploying additional fighters to the battlefield.

The Kataeb Party, therefore, issues a stark warning against repeating the disastrous mistakes of Hezbollah’s involvement in regional conflicts, which have brought untold hardship to Lebanon and its people. The Bureau poses a critical question: “Is it not time to learn from these experiences, turn inward, and focus on repairing the damage inflicted by their last war?”

Additionally, the Party underscores the critical need for enhanced border security. It commended recent measures by General Security and urged all security agencies, especially the Lebanese Armed Forces, to tighten control over border crossings, particularly illegal ones. Such measures are vital to preventing further waves of displaced individuals from entering Lebanon, which is already at its breaking point and ill-equipped to accommodate additional arrivals, especially given the limited habitable areas following the recent conflict.

3. Following the cessation of hostilites, certain groups have rushed to assess damages and make promises of reconstruction and aid distribution. The Kataeb Party cautions against repeating past mismanagement, where public funds were recklessly squandered to serve narrow interests, lining the pockets of a privileged few at the expense of the Lebanese people.

The Party asserts that reconstruction efforts must not fall into the hands of the same councils and agencies long associated with corruption and favoritism. Instead, it calls for the establishment of a stringent and transparent mechanism, subject to strict oversight, to ensure that resources are utilized equitably and effectively for the benefit of all Lebanese citizens.
