The Kataeb's Political Bureau held its weekly meeting under the chairmanship of party leader Samy Gemayel, during which it reviewed the latest political and security developments in Lebanon. Following the meeting, it issued the following statement:
1. The Political Bureau expresses its support for the positions of President Joseph Aoun, particularly his determination to reclaim Lebanon’s sovereign decision-making free from any external influence, and his affirmation that only the Lebanese State has the authority to take decisions in the interest of the country and its people, in a way that ensures lasting stability and peace.
The Bureau calls for accelerating the implementation of government decisions aimed at establishing the State’s exclusive control over arms and prohibiting any military or security activity by Hezbollah. It also stresses the need to continue diplomatic efforts to secure a permanent ceasefire, ensure Israel’s withdrawal, secure the release of detainees, and bring a definitive end to the state of war.
2. The Political Bureau considers that the threats issued by Hezbollah officials against the Lebanese State and its leadership—including references to assassination and comparisons with the fate of former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat—are consistent with public Iranian positions, particularly statements attributed to Supreme Leader adviser Ali Akbar Velayati, who issued direct threats against the Lebanese government.
It further considers that Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf's statement indicating that the decision to launch the war was taken at Iran’s request effectively undermines Hezbollah’s narrative that it acts in Lebanon’s defense, strips it of its self-proclaimed status as a “resistance” movement, and exposes the extent of its subordination to Iran.
Accordingly, the Political Bureau urges the competent authorities to enforce existing decisions and take all necessary legal and diplomatic measures to address this reality.
3. The Kataeb Party considers that Hezbollah’s targeting of UNIFIL forces, which resulted in the death of a French soldier and the injury of three others, amounts to a direct and explicit message of intimidation to Lebanon’s international partners who are seeking to help the country restore sovereign control over its decision-making. The party believes this incident should prompt increased international pressure aimed at freeing Lebanon from Iranian influence.
The Political Bureau calls on the Lebanese Army to complete its investigation, publicly identify those responsible, and ensure the harshest penalties are imposed.
