The United States has transferred a second advanced missile defense system to Israel, amid growing tensions over Iran's nuclear activities, Al-Hadath channel reported on Saturday.
According to the outlet, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery was delivered on Friday. Flight-tracking data showed a U.S. Air Force C-5M Super Galaxy—America’s largest military transport aircraft—landing at Israel's Nevatim Airbase in the southern Negev region. The aircraft remained on the ground for approximately eight hours before departing.
The THAAD system, designed to intercept ballistic missiles during their final phase of flight, has been active in Israel over the past year. It has reportedly been used to intercept several missiles fired at Israel by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, including in recent weeks.
The U.S. first rushed a THAAD battery to Israel last year in response to escalating threats from Tehran and its regional proxies. Around 100 American troops are believed to be stationed in Israel to operate the system, which complements the Patriot missile defense platform but offers greater range—capable of engaging targets up to 200 kilometers away.
The latest delivery comes against the backdrop of heightened rhetoric and military posturing between Washington and Tehran. Last week, former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Iran, threatening military action and secondary sanctions should the Islamic Republic refuse to reach a new agreement with the United States regarding its nuclear program.
