UNIFIL's Ardiel Assures Calm Restored in Southern Lebanon After Tense Standoff

Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Kandice Ardiel, said that south Lebanon have breathed a sigh of relief, confirming that calm has been largely restored to the region after a period of heightened anxiety.

“The level of tension in the south has diminished,” Ardiel assured in an interview on Al-Hurra news channel, highlighting the crucial role UNIFIL played in mitigating the situation.

The peacekeeping force, Ardiel noted, actively engaged with the parties involved to de-escalate the conflict and prevent further deterioration. She stressed that despite the current calm, there remains a risk of miscalculations and errors, highlighting the importance of diplomatic efforts to avoid a larger conflict.

"We witnessed very concerning developments early Sunday. Fortunately, the intensity of this tension has subsided, but the situation could have deteriorated significantly. We remain cautious about such a scenario," she said.

She called on all parties to agree on a ceasefire and adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which aims to stabilize the region.

Ardiel noted that while both sides have expressed a reluctance to engage in a full-scale war, they are prepared for such a scenario.

"I am confident that the war will end soon," she stated.

Looking ahead to the renewal of UNIFIL's mandate on August 29, Ardiel mentioned that the force is awaiting the Security Council’s decision, which will guide their future actions.

“It is crucial to continue coordinating with the Lebanese Army, which is the legitimate security authority in Lebanon. We are here to support this authority and ensure that the Lebanese Army can independently manage peacekeeping efforts in southern Lebanon,” Ardiel explained.

Regarding concerns about potential reductions in UNIFIL personnel, Ardiel assured that there are no indications of changes in the force’s deployment.

In response to questions about compliance with Resolution 1701, Ardiel highlighted that neither Israel nor Hezbollah has demonstrated a clear political will to fully implement the resolution amid daily exchanges of fire between the two sides.
