Trump–Aoun Meeting in Preparation as Lebanon-Israel Diplomacy Advances

A bilateral meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is being prepared and is expected to take place soon, according to information obtained by MTV Lebanon, as diplomatic contacts intensify around Lebanon’s ongoing negotiations with Israel.

However, LBCI reported that while the idea of a direct meeting between the two leaders has been raised, no practical preparations have yet been completed, leaving the timing uncertain.

The diplomatic momentum comes as President Aoun continues a series of consultations linked to recent U.S.-brokered discussions between Lebanon and Israel. Earlier on Monday, U.S. Ambassador Michel Issa mer with Aoun before heading to Ain el-Tineh for talks with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. According to reports, Issa briefed the Lebanese president on the Lebanese-Israeli-American meeting held in Washington and on efforts underway to prepare the ground for future rounds of negotiations.

Separately, Lebanese sources told Al Hadath that a second round of Lebanon-Israel talks is expected to be held either next Tuesday or Wednesday. The sources said the upcoming preliminary meeting would take place at ambassadorial level, with the Lebanese delegation expected to include former Ambassador Simon Karam alongside both civilian and military representatives.

MTV Lebanon further reported that Trump reassured Aoun during a phone call last week regarding the possibility of extending the ceasefire with Israel if necessary. The report added that Trump expressed understanding of the need for conditions to mature before any direct contact or meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Aoun is expected to further clarify this approach in his ongoing communications with the U.S. administration.

In parallel, a diplomatic source told MTV Lebanon that Lebanese officials have emphasized to Washington the importance of restraining criticism directed at the Lebanese army. The source added that U.S. officials appear to understand the army’s role, noting that American interests in Lebanon have largely not been targeted and are considered to have been protected with the help of the military.

The same source said the Lebanese president appears determined to continue along the path of direct negotiations with Israel, with the stated aim of bringing an end to a conflict that has spanned decades. It also noted that significant expectations are being placed on the role of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri during the current phase of diplomacy.
