Trump Tells Aoun Lebanon Ceasefire Decision Could Come Soon

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun held a phone call on Thursday with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, as diplomatic efforts intensified to secure a ceasefire in Lebanon amid Israel’s ongoing war with Hezbollah.

According to a statement from the Lebanese presidency, Aoun thanked Trump for Washington’s efforts to reach a ceasefire and to establish lasting peace and stability in Lebanon as a step toward a broader regional peace process. He urged the U.S. president to continue those efforts and to help secure a truce “at the earliest possible time.”

The statement added that Trump expressed his support for Aoun and for Lebanon, stressing his commitment to responding to Beirut’s request for a ceasefire as soon as possible.

Israel’s public broadcaster reported that Trump told Aoun a decision on a potential ceasefire in Lebanon could be made within hours, underscoring the urgency of ongoing diplomatic contacts.

The call came as Israel weighs whether to accept a ceasefire in its conflict with Hezbollah. A U.S. official told Axios that Trump would “welcome” such a move, while an Israeli security cabinet meeting held Wednesday night ended without a final decision.

An Israeli defense official said a ceasefire announcement could come as early as Thursday evening.

“We are at a crossroads. Nothing is final, but it could happen today,” the official told Axios.

Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shortly before holding a call with the Lebanese president to discuss a potential ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, Israel's Channel 12 reported.
