Tottenham Hotspur do not expect to appoint Julian Nagelsmann as the club’s next permanent head coach.
Nagelsmann has been linked with the Spurs job ever since being sacked by Bayern Munich, but the club have insisted he is not currently under consideration for the post.
It remains to be seen whether that situation changes, with sources stressing Tottenham have great respect for Nagelsmann, but the club are expected to look elsewhere in their search for Antonio Conte’s permanent successor.
Telegraph Sport revealed last week that Tottenham would face a big compensation bill to hire Nagelsmann while he is still on gardening leave after leaving Bayern.
Contact has been made with former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique, while Feyenoord’s Arne Slot, Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou and Sporting’s Ruben Amorim are all believed to be under the consideration of Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.
Levy is also looking for a new sporting director and Tottenham’s list of candidates for that job is thought to include Roma’s Tiago Pinto.
Brentford’s Lee Dykes and Johannes Spors, who works for 777 Partners, are also among those under consideration for a senior role, following the departure of Fabio Paratici, who was forced to step down as managing director of football at Spurs.
While Dykes and Spors have already been linked to the Tottenham post, Pinto is a new name who is, according to sources, being taken seriously by chairman Daniel Levy.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s Markus Krosche has also been mentioned in conversations, but he is thought to be on Bayern Munich’s radar and would be expected to turn down any approach from Spurs.
Pinto, on the other hand, is believed to be keen on the prospect of working in England and would most likely welcome an approach.
The appointment of the new sporting director could prove pivotal to Tottenham’s search for a new head coach and Nagelsmann had been unwilling to enter into talks without knowing the identity of the favoured candidate.
Pinto, who has been linked with West Ham United, was director of football at Benfica between 2017 and 2020 before being appointed by Roma, helping them to win last season’s Europa Conference League. Roma are on course to reach the final of this season’s Europa League after beating Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their semi-final.
Whoever takes on the sporting director role at Tottenham, under whatever title, will work under chief football officer Scott Munn, who is due to start work on July 1. Munn is thought to already know Spors.
