Saade on Third Extension of Municipal Elections: Ruling Class Shuns Accountability

Kataeb’s Head of Public Policy and Legislation Lara Saade affirmed that the Kataeb Party rejects the third extension of municipal elections and will file an appeal before the Constitutional Council.

"It is unacceptable to have more than a third of Lebanon's municipalities dissolved. Officials are still considering whether to extend or postpone the elections, as these municipalities need to fulfill the needs of their citizens, particularly given the security chaos," Saade said in an interview with Voice of Lebanon radio station.

"Governors are unable to oversee a large number of dissolved municipalities in addition to their administrative and oversight responsibilities in other areas. Consequently, this contributes to a state of paralysis in the country and the failure to meet the basic needs of citizens," she noted.

"Municipal elections were held throughout Lebanon except in the southern regions during the Israeli occupation in the south in 1998. The excuse of the ongoing war in the South was never acceptable," she pointed out.

"The truth is that the ruling class has done nothing in terms of reforms over the past years and avoids accountability. Citizens can no longer tolerate the approach of negligence, irresponsibility, and lack of accountability," she emphasized.

"Today, municipalities rely on external sources of funding to carry out their work, but we observe that donor countries are no longer providing the necessary funding to municipal councils considering they have lost their legitimacy, and at the same time, we are fully aware that the government is unable to secure this funding," she explained.

"Municipal elections must be held as soon as possible," Saade concluded.
