Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to accept a ceasefire with Hezbollah was influenced by diplomatic and military considerations, according to an Israeli official who spoke to The Times of Israel.
The official indicated that Israel was mindful of potential repercussions from the Biden administration at the United Nations Security Council. While the U.S. has not explicitly threatened punitive measures, the possibility of such actions played a role in Israel’s calculations.
Another key factor was Israel’s reliance on critical military supplies from the U.S., including 130 D9 bulldozers, which the official described as urgently needed for ongoing operations.
Domestic political factors also contributed to the decision. Although some ministers initially opposed the ceasefire, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir ultimately supported the agreement, recognizing its strategic significance.
The ceasefire is reportedly also seen as a move that strengthens Israel’s position in the broader conflict.
“Hamas aimed to rally Hezbollah’s support, but cutting that connection allows us to negotiate a resolution in Gaza on more favorable terms,” the official stated.
According to the report, the agreement also enables Israel to redeploy additional forces to Gaza, should the situation require it. Despite its temporary nature, the official described the ceasefire as a “strategic achievement” that isolates Hamas and preserves Israel’s operational flexibility in the region.
