Lebanon’s Parliament on Thursday approved two highly anticipated pieces of legislation, as it ratified a law restructuring the judicial system and another overhauling the banking sector during a critical evening legislative session aimed at pushing forward long-stalled reforms.
The session saw lawmakers endorse the draft law on the organization of the judiciary (Decree No. 315) with a single article, following weeks of debate and revisions. The law was passed based on a final version aimed at aligning the proposal submitted by the parliamentary Administration and Justice Committee with the government's own draft.
The Parliament also passed the long-awaited Banking Sector Reform Law, with most of its articles approved as submitted by the Finance and Budget Committee. The legislation is seen as a central component of Lebanon’s efforts to restructure its collapsing financial system and unlock international aid.
Parliament also passed several other laws during the session. One amended provisions of Law No. 11, issued on June 12, 2025, regarding leases for non-residential properties. The amendment was approved in line with revisions put forward by the Administration and Justice Committee.
Another approved draft amended Law No. 73, dated April 23, 2009, and its modifications related to the conditions under which public school principals receive administrative compensation. That too passed with a single article.
However, not all proposed legislation moved forward. Parliament voted to return a draft amendment to Paragraph B of Article 37 of Law No. 367 — governing the pharmacy profession — back to the Health Committee for further study.
