The Kataeb's political bureau held its weekly meeting, chaired by Party President Samy Gemayel, to review the latest political and security developments. Following the session, it released the statement below:
1. On the occasion of the Kataeb’s 89th anniversary, the political bureau reaffirms the party's unwavering commitment to its core principles and to the mission it has pursued since its founding: defending Lebanon’s sovereignty and full independence. Throughout their history, Kataeb members have demonstrated a steadfast determination to safeguard Lebanon’s free decision-making, uphold the rule of law and state institutions, and preserve the country’s coexistence. Today, the Kataeb Party renews its pledge to work tirelessly to secure full sovereignty and build a strong state capable of protecting its citizens and ensuring their future, thus honoring the sacrifices of those who came before and carrying forward the national mission passed down through generations.
2. The bureau believes that the assassination of Hezbollah commander Haitham al-Tabtabai requires urgent action from the Lebanese government. Domestically, the government must take decisive measures to expedite the process of placing all weapons under the State’s exclusive authority. Externally, the government must launch an intensive diplomatic push toward influential world powers to translate President Joseph Aoun’s initiative into concrete steps and to align with the efforts of international and regional envoys seeking to spare Lebanon further escalation and collapse.
3. The statement also highlights the political and diplomatic outreach led by Party President Samy Gemayel, through a series of visits to regional and international capitals and his recent election as Vice President of the Centrist Democrat International. These efforts provide an opportunity to present the Kataeb’s perspective on Lebanon’s unfolding crisis, underscore the priority of restoring sovereignty and reasserting state authority, and rally support for Lebanon at a defining moment of its history.
4. The bureau welcomes the historic upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to Lebanon, calling it a profoundly significant event in both timing and substance. The visit carries deep national and humanitarian significance, reflecting a spiritual embrace of Lebanon by the world’s highest ecclesiastical authority at an exceptionally delicate time.
The Kataeb Party emphasizes the need to transform the papal visit into a unifying national moment; one that reinforces the Lebanese people’s attachment to their identity, their coexistence, and Lebanon’s enduring role as a message to the world. The party urges all Lebanese to participate widely in welcoming the Pope and to engage with this pivotal visit, which once again shines international attention on Lebanon, as well as its place and mission in the global community.
