Mikati Hails Army as Bedrock of National Unity in Troubling Times

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati underscored the vital role of the Lebanese Army in maintaining national unity amidst a backdrop of political and regional turmoil, lamenting the impact of the ongoing presidential vacuum and the broader challenges facing the nation.

"The presidential vacuum is not the only thing marring the joy of this national day, but also the broader circumstances the country is enduring, culminating in the recent assault on the southern suburbs," Mikati said during a visit to the military headquarters in Yarzeh to mark the Lebanese Army Day.

Mikati expressed concern over regional developments, which he described as "alarming", noting that they signal an increased level of danger.

He stressed that “relying on the Army remains the definitive guarantee for the nation's unity,” describing support for the military as a collective national duty.

The caretaker PM called for political cohesion so as to support the Army’s efforts, urging parliament members to overcome their differences and engage in dialogue to elect a president.

Addressing the ongoing securing concerns, Mikati said nothing suggests that Israeli arrogance will cease, affirming his determination to defend Lebanon’s territory and its sovereignty, “no matter the sacrifices required."

Mikati, nonetheless, highlighted Lebanon's commitment to lasting peace and stability, welcoming any initiative that would help reclaim occupied territories.
