Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rahi expressed his bewilderment over the ongoing failure to elect a president for Lebanon, highlighting the growing frustration and anxiety among the Lebanese as the political deadlock continues to undermine the country's stability and governance.
"I still don't understand why they haven't elected a president yet," Al-Rahi said in an interview on LBCI, further questioning the commitment to the National Pact, which aims to ensure balanced representation of various religious communities in Lebanon's political system.
“Where is the adherence to the National Pact regarding Christian representation in the practices of both the Parliament and the Cabinet?"
Patriarch Al-Rahi also expressed deep concern for the country's constitutional institutions which he believes are being compromised by external and internal influences, noting that the presidential elections have been inextricably linked to unrelated issues, such as the war in Gaza and other regional matters.
"Lebanon is in urgent need of a president," he emphasized, warning that the current state of affairs amounts to "playing with the fate of the nation."
