Lebanon’s Interior Minister, Ahmed Al-Hajjar, confirmed on Tuesday that the country is set to hold its municipal elections in May, with voting scheduled in four phases starting on May 4. The announcement followed a session of the Parliament’s National Defense, Interior, and Municipalities Committee, chaired by MP Jihad Al-Samad, which focused on preparations for the upcoming elections.
“We are committed to holding the municipal elections on time, across all designated locations,” Al-Hajjar said, assuring that all necessary preparations are in place.
He indicated that surveys conducted by governors in areas devastated by the recent war could lead to specific decisions aimed at addressing local challenges.
Al-Hajjar also addressed concerns raised by lawmakers regarding the timeline for calling the voter registration.
“The law allows for the call to be made within two months or, at a minimum, one month in advance,” he explained. “This means the call for voters must be issued before April 4.”
Emphasizing the ongoing preparations, the minister assured that efforts are being made on all levels, with particular attention given to the southern regions of Lebanon. Al-Hajjar revealed that he is in daily communication with the governors of Nabatieh and the South, working on a comprehensive survey to ensure smooth election procedures.
