Lebanese President Receives First Foreign Visitors as Cypriot and Italian Officials Show Solidarity

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun hosted Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades on Friday at Baabda Palace, marking the first visit by a foreign head of state since Aoun formally assumed the presidency.

In a brief statement following their meeting, Anastasiades reaffirmed his support for Lebanon, saying, "I came today to stand by the Lebanese state and extended an invitation to President Aoun to visit Brussels." He also highlighted the significance of his visit as a gesture of solidarity with Lebanon during this pivotal moment.

Later, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani also visited Baabda Palace. Tajani met with President Aoun and reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to Lebanon’s stability.

Tajani emphasized the broader regional significance of Lebanon's presidential election, remarking that Aoun’s election was "very important not only for Lebanon but also for the entire Middle East." He stressed that Aoun’s leadership is essential to Lebanon's stability, which in turn would strengthen its international relations.

"With a president who possesses great wisdom, Lebanon can fulfill its rightful role," Tajani added, calling for the continued implementation of the ceasefire agreement, which he said is crucial for regional peace.

Tajani reiterated Italy's commitment to closely working with Lebanon in the years to come. He also shared observations from his recent trip to Damascus, where he met with the leader of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed Al-Sharaa. Tajani noted significant changes in Syria and expressed optimism for the country’s future, stating, "I am sure Syria will grow again, and there will be stability in the Middle East."
