Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned an attack on a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) convoy near Beirut airport, vowing to hold the perpetrators accountable and directing security forces to restore order.
In a statement issued by the presidency, Aoun said the attack on the UN peacekeeping force’s outgoing deputy commander was "unacceptable," emphasizing that it "cannot be allowed to happen again."
The president also stated that "security forces will not be lenient with any party that tries to undermine stability and civil peace in the country."
Lebanese authorities are set to hold an emergency meeting following the incident, which left the UNIFIL official wounded. The statement noted that Aoun had checked on the deputy commander’s condition and instructed the army and security forces to put an end to ongoing roadblocks, fires, and riots.
The president stressed the need to track down those responsible for disturbing public order and refer them to the judiciary, which has already launched investigations.
Aoun also warned against heeding "suspicious calls" that could incite further unrest, urging that all forms of protest remain peaceful. He underscored that security forces would take necessary action should demonstrations exceed permissible limits and threaten public safety.
