The Kataeb’s Political Bureau convened its weekly meeting under the chairmanship of Party President Samy Gemayel to review the latest political and security developments. Following the meeting, the Bureau issued the following statement:
1. On the occasion of the first anniversary of President Joseph Aoun’s election, the Political Bureau commends efforts to restore Lebanon’s sovereignty and its authority over matters of war and peace through ongoing negotiations, while advancing essential State reforms. The Bureau urges the President to persevere without hesitation, ensuring the enforcement of State authority across all Lebanese territory.
In this context, the Political Bureau welcomes the completion of the first phase of the disarmament plan south of the Litani River and calls for the immediate launch and swift implementation of the second phase to the north of the river. These measures are essential to ensure security, stability, and peace for residents of southern Lebanon and all Lebanese citizens.
The Bureau emphasizes that containing weapons and asserting state authority by disarming all armed groups operating outside the law is a constitutional and national duty. This responsibility is not subject to political or sectarian considerations. It remains a core principle of the Kataeb Party and an urgent national necessity, independent of external pressures or international demands.
2. The Political Bureau stresses that holding parliamentary elections under the current electoral law, which the government itself considers unenforceable in its present form, is not feasible.
The Bureau therefore calls on the Speaker of Parliament to convene a general session to address this issue and amend the law to allow Lebanese expatriates to vote for all 128 members of parliament from abroad. Such reform is essential to uphold constitutional equality and ensure citizens’ full participation in the political life of their country.
3. The Political Bureau reaffirms its commitment to a relationship of clear friendship and equality between Lebanon and Syria, grounded in mutual respect and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs. It welcoms the constructive cooperation between the Lebanese and Syrian Ministries of Justice regarding judicial coordination on the issue of Syrian detainees in Lebanon.
The Bureau also stresses that Lebanon will not serve as a passageway or base for any interference in Syrian affairs. It calls on security agencies to rigorously monitor and pursue remnants of the Assad regime and anyone seeking to disrupt security or engage in activities that threaten the stability of both countries.
