Israel Publishes Updated Map Showing Deepened Presence in Southern Lebanon

The Israeli military released on Thursday an updated map of its designated security zone in southern Lebanon, indicating that it does not plan to withdraw from the area at this stage, even as negotiations with Lebanon continue over future arrangements.

According to the map, the Israeli deployment line stretches east to west and extends up to 10 kilometers (six miles) inside Lebanese territory from the border.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said troops remain positioned within what it describes as an “area of operation” in southern Lebanon, where they will continue efforts to “remove threats” and reinforce the security of communities in northern Israel.

The updated map suggests Israeli forces have advanced deeper into Lebanese territory since the announcement of a “forward defense line” in April, reaching areas near the outskirts of Nabatiyeh.

The military said any potential withdrawal from southern Lebanon remains under discussion as part of ongoing direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, with another round of talks expected next week in Washington.

At this stage, the IDF said it will continue holding its positions “in accordance with operational needs,” with the stated aim of eliminating threats to its forces and to civilian communities along Israel’s northern border.

The army also called on the Lebanese Armed Forces to coordinate its movements and avoid approaching the designated security zone while operations continue in the area.

Israeli Public Broadcasting reported, citing a source, that the updated military map confirms the presence of Israeli forces in the hills of Ali al-Taher and Kfar Tibnit, near Nabatiyeh. It added that the issue of withdrawal from positions inside Lebanon is expected to be discussed with the Lebanese delegation during talks in Washington next week.

Meanwhile, Israeli media further reported that the maritime security zone in Lebanon is considered an extension of the land-based security zone.

Channel 14 quoted the Israeli military as saying that next steps regarding southern Lebanon are being handled through political channels and ongoing negotiations with Lebanon, adding that it has urged the Lebanese Army to coordinate its activities with Israeli forces operating in the area.
