Israeli airstrikes and artillery bombardments killed at least 16 people across southern Lebanon overnight, Lebanese state media reported, as renewed hostilities threatened to undermine the emerging U.S.-Iran agreement aimed at ending fighting across several regional fronts.
The Israeli military said its forces had targeted Hezbollah positions throughout southern Lebanon overnight and were continuing operations, describing the strikes as a response to what it called repeated violations of the ceasefire by the Iran-backed group.
"During the night, the army struck and continues to strike Hezbollah terrorists and infrastructure in several areas in southern Lebanon," the Israeli military said in a statement.
According to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA), Israeli warplanes targeted inhabited residential areas in villages across the Nabatiyeh district before dawn, causing multiple casualties and widespread destruction.
Preliminary figures reported by the agency showed that at least 16 people were killed in the strikes. The reported toll included eight people killed in Harouf, three members of the same family killed in Kfarsir, and four people killed in Sharqiyeh. The figures released by Lebanese authorities did not distinguish between civilians and combatants.
In a separate attack, an Israeli drone struck a motorcycle on the Abbassiyeh-Hammadiyeh junction road near Forouj Roumieh before dawn, killing one person.
The escalation triggered a new wave of displacement from southern Lebanon. Heavy traffic congestion was reported at the northern entrance to Sidon as residents fled villages and towns in the south toward Sidon and Beirut amid continued bombardment.
The NNA reported that Israeli warplanes also carried out two powerful strikes targeting residential buildings in the town of Deir al-Zahrani. No casualties were immediately reported from those attacks.
Elsewhere, a series of airstrikes and artillery shelling hit multiple locations in the Nabatiyeh and Jezzine districts, including Zibdine, Rihan, Nabatiyeh al-Fawqa, Kfartebnit, Kfarreman, Kfarjouz, Habboush, the Rahibat neighborhood of Nabatiyeh, and the Ali al-Taher area.
The attacks were accompanied by the firing of illumination flares and intensive machine-gun fire in the areas of Ali al-Taher and Kfartebnit, according to Lebanese media reports.
Israeli warplanes also launched strikes on the Abu Rashid heights in the Western Bekaa region.
The Israeli military said the operations targeted Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure, adding that the campaign was ongoing.
