Kataeb Party Rejects Deviation from Presidential Election Constitutional Stipulations

The Kataeb Party’s political bureau held a meeting under the chairmanship of Party President Samy Gemayel. After discussing the latest developments, the following statement was issued:

1. The political bureau fully endorses the roadmap announced by the opposition forces to address the presidential elections deadlock. It remains committed to electing a president who is suitable for the current phase, capable of upholding the Constitution and sovereignty, representing Lebanon, protecting its interests, and garnering consensus among the Lebanese people, rather than being imposed against their will.

The politburo rejects attempts to establish new norms or practices that deviate from the guidelines governing the election of the president as stipulated by the Lebanese Constitution.

The politburo believes the opposition has fulfilled its duty by extending a hand to the other side and meeting them halfway. It now deems it imperative to immediately call for open sessions to elect a president, as this is the simplest duty of the parliament.

2. The politburo considers the statements made by the Hezbollah camp, suggesting that the war in Lebanon will cease once a solution is reached in Gaza, to further entrench Lebanon's fate in uncertainty amid the complexities of each negotiation round.

The politburo believes that the escalation by both sides could lead to dangerous outcomes, including the possibility of an open confrontation that Lebanon and its people, especially the residents of the south, will bear the brunt of, with significant losses in lives and property, and many villages leveled to the ground.

3. The politburo is deeply concerned about the plight of depositors whose lifetime savings have been trapped in banks. After years of hardship, they now face the greatest act of deceit and blame-shifting, leaving them at risk of losing all their money, while the main culprits live lavishly in grand palaces, unaccountable and unchallenged.

The politburo demands that those responsible for this issue disclose the full truth to the Lebanese people, no matter how difficult it may be. They must work daily to present, approve, and diligently implement a comprehensive plan, and take full responsibility for its outcomes.
