Kataeb Party Announces Boycott of Parliament Session Over Exclusion of Expat Voting Bill

The Kataeb’s Political Bureau held its weekly meeting, chaired by Party Leader Samy Gemayel, to discuss the latest political and security developments. Following the meeting, the Bureau issued the following statement:

1- The Political Bureau strongly condemns Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri’s insistence on excluding the draft law granting Lebanese expatriates the right to vote from Tuesday’s legislative session agenda. This is a blatant attempt to silence the voices of 67 MPs who have demanded that the bill be referred to the General Assembly for discussion. Blocking such a debate constitutes a violation of the Constitution and an assault on the will of the Lebanese people, both at home and abroad. Accordingly, the Kataeb bloc will boycott the upcoming legislative session.

The Bureau also rejects Berri’s claim that reopening debate on the electoral law seeks to “isolate a sect,” deeming this statement as dangerous and unacceptable in both form and substance. The Party reaffirms that granting hundreds of thousands of Lebanese expatriates — from all sects and regions — the right to help shape their country’s future does not isolate anyone. On the contrary, it upholds the Constitution and embodies the principle of equality among all citizens. Those who truly isolate their community are the ones who reject the authority of the State, resist equality, and cling to their weapons.

2- The Political Bureau believes that meaningful engagement in diplomatic negotiations has become the only viable path for Lebanon to avoid consequences it can no longer bear,  particularly isolation in a region that has chosen to move away from war and embrace peace. This is evident through international warnings and growing Arab and regional appeals for Lebanon to align itself with the region’s stabilization efforts.
The Bureau stresses that the pursuit of diplomacy represents a sovereign national responsibility that must be led by the Lebanese State and its legitimate institutions in order to safeguard Lebanon’s higher interests by restoring stability, preserving sovereignty, and paving the way for reconstruction and economic recovery.

3- The Political Bureau condemns the killing of 23-year-old Elio Abu Hanna, describing it as further evidence of the grave danger posed by the proliferation of illegal weapons both inside and outside Palestinian camps, and of the State’s failure to exercise full authority over its territory. The Bureau calls on the government to immediately complete the disarmament of the camps, reassert full State control, and enforce the law equally on everyone, without exception.
