Israeli FM Says Lebanon Must End ‘Iranian Occupation’ in Meeting with UN Envoy

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called on Lebanon to cut loose from ties with Iran, warning that Tehran is funneling funds to Hezbollah in an effort to restore its military capabilities.

During a meeting in Jerusalem with United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, Sa’ar stressed that “Iran is smuggling funds to Hezbollah in Lebanon to rebuild its strength."

"Lebanon has an opportunity to break free from the Iranian occupation,” Sa'ar told the UN envoy, according to a readout from his office.

His remarks come amid reports that Lebanese authorities seized $2.5 million in cash in late February, with three sources indicating the funds were destined for the Iran-backed Hezbollah.

Sa’ar also outlined Israel’s security stance, highlighting the five Israeli military positions still inside Lebanese territory along the border. He said their presence was necessary to prevent Hezbollah from re-establishing its foothold in the area.

Discussions also covered the broader security situation, the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, and developments within Lebanon, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said.
