Israel is aiming to secure a long-term agreement in Lebanon as ceasefire talks continue, according to Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar.
“We would like to reach an agreement that will stand the test of time,” Sa’ar said in an address to nearly 100 foreign ambassadors in Jerusalem.
"We need to keep the freedom to act if there will be violations. And we will have to act in time, before the problem grows," he added, emphasizing the importance of ensuring Israel’s ability to respond to any violations.
"We will strike Hezbollah even if a ceasefire deal is reached, if we are attacked or if we observe attempts by Hezbollah to send forces south of the Litani River or rearm through Syria, by sea, or through civilian airports," Sa’ar stated.
The foreign minister also referred to the ceasefire as a potential "opportunity" for Lebanon, which has been devastated by ongoing hostilities. With Hezbollah's military capabilities reportedly weakened, Sa’ar sees this as a critical moment for Lebanon to regain its sovereignty. He called for empowering the Lebanese army, stressing that it is essential for Lebanon’s future stability.
"The international community must invest in Lebanon, especially now, as it grapples with crippling debt," he said.
