Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has accused Turkey of cooperating with Iran’s efforts to smuggle money to Hezbollah, aiming to restore the militant group’s power and influence in Lebanon.
Sa’ar made the accusation during a meeting with a bipartisan group of U.S. senators and Deputy Middle East Special Envoy Morgan Ortagus. The group of U.S. lawmakers included Senators Lindsey Graham, Dan Sullivan, Sheldon Whitehouse, Richard Blumenthal, Joni Ernst, Adam Schiff, and Andy Kim.
According to a statement from Sa’ar’s office, the foreign minister explained that Iran is intensifying its attempts to funnel money into Lebanon to bolster Hezbollah, using various channels, including cooperation with Turkey.
“There is an intensified Iranian effort to smuggle money into Lebanon for Hezbollah to restore its power and status. This effort is being carried out, among other channels, via Turkey and with its cooperation,” Sa’ar reportedly said.
The foreign minister also expressed concern about Iran’s nuclear program, stating that the country is attempting to recover from setbacks faced over the past year. He described the developments as “worrying,” further underscoring the challenges posed by Iran's activities.
Regarding the ongoing situation in Syria, Sa’ar was asked for his thoughts on the U.S. troop withdrawal. According to his office, Sa’ar indicated that the timing was not appropriate due to the ongoing fight against ISIS and the “new situation” in Syria, which includes threats to Kurdish autonomy.
