Israeli and French Diplomats Address Ceasefire Compliance in Lebanon

Diplomatic discussions between France and Israel on Monday focused on allegations of ceasefire violations in Lebanon, as well as regional security concerns.

In a phone call with his Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa'ar, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot emphasized the importance of adherence to the ceasefire in Lebanon and urged for its full implementation. According to a statement by the French Foreign Ministry, Barrot stressed to Sa'ar “the need for all parties to respect the ceasefire,” as he also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and the facilitation of humanitarian aid.

The conversation also addressed renewed hostilities in Syria and developments related to Iran’s nuclear program, the French Foreign Ministry stated.

Israeli Response to Ceasefire Allegations

For his part, Sa’ar rejected accusations that Israel had violated the ceasefire, stating that the army's actions were aimed at addressing violations by Hezbollah. According to a statement on the phone call by Israeli Foreign Ministry, Sa’ar cited examples of Hezbollah operatives transporting weapons and operating south of the Litani River, activities he described as contraventions of the ceasefire terms.

Sa’ar called on the Lebanese government to empower its army to enforce the agreement and reiterated Israel’s position that it would not revert to the prewar situation.

United States Comments on Ceasefire Compliance

Reports in Hebrew media indicated that the U.S. also raised concerns regarding Israeli actions in Lebanon as Special Envoy Amos Hochstein reportedly conveyed a message urging Israel to uphold the ceasefire terms, citing drone operations over Beirut.

Military Operations and Ground Activities

The Israeli army confirmed conducting airstrikes in Lebanon on Monday, targeting what it described as Hezbollah operatives and facilities. The targets reportedly included missile manufacturing sites in the Bekaa Valley and vehicles transporting weapons near the Lebanon-Syria border.

Lebanese authorities reported that one of the strikes injured a soldier during fortification work at a military base in the Hermel area. Separately, the Lebanese Army announced the discovery of the body of an officer in Naqoura, stating that he had been killed in an Israeli airstrike a week earlier.

The National News Agency reported that Israeli forces blocked the Mays El Jabal-Shaqra road, constructed dirt mounds, and later withdrew. Similar activity was reported near Houla, where Israeli forces blocked a road connecting the town to the Wadi Al-Slouqi area.

The agency also reported that artillery shells targeted the town of Yater, while Israeli drones conducted strikes in Ayta Al-Shaab and Marjayoun, killing one person near a power station.

Lebanon’s Directorate General of State Security issued a statement following the death of Corporal Mahdi Khreis, who was targeted by an Israeli drone. The statement described the incident as a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
