Gemayel Says Striving to Facilitate Presidential Election in the Face of Obstructors

In a meeting at his office in Bikfaya, Lebanese Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel on Tuesday met with the Head of the National Dialogue Party, MP Fouad Makhzoumi.

The discussions, which covered the latest developments, also included MP Elias Hankach and Makhzoumi's political advisor, Dr. Carol Zouein.

Following the meeting, Gemayel emphasized the continued coordination within the opposition forces, highlighting the importance of united efforts and reiterating the ongoing struggle in defense of the Lebanese people.

Gemayel noted that the meeting provided an opportunity to further consultations and coordination on various issues, with a focus on joint efforts within the opposition to push for the election of a president.

“This stands in stark contrast to others who are attempting to obstruct the elections by any means,” Gemayel stated, expressing a desire to facilitate the election of a president who could revive Lebanon’s institutions, renew hope for the future, and open the door for the country to reclaim its regional and global role.

Gemayel also stressed the importance of working through the State institutions to restore Lebanon’s sovereignty and set the country on the right track for economic recovery, which has been stalled for years due to Hezbollah's obstruction of democratic processes, including the election of a president and the appointment of a competent prime minister capable of saving Lebanon.

For his part, MP Makhzoumi outlined the need to move beyond trivial matters in order to achieve substantial progress, saying that the country urgently needs a president and that the international community is urging Lebanon to bridge differences to this end.

“Without electing a president, necessary reforms, agreements with the International Monetary Fund, reopening Lebanon to investments, and restoring trust will all be impossible,” he stated.

Makhzoumi added that the opposition is working cohesively, having agreed to harmonize views to capitalize on the momentum from the "Quintet" initiative and the visit of French Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who is encouraging the election process.

The lawmaker expressed hopes for an end to the devastating conflict in the south and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
