In an interview with LBCI, Kataeb Leader Samy Gemayel emphasized the significance of designating Nawaf Salam as Prime Minister of the first government under the new presidential term.
He stated: “All parties who voted for Salam demonstrated great responsibility, starting with the candidates, particularly Fouad Makhzoumi and MP Ashraf Rifi, as well as all blocs and forces. This collective effort is the key to the success of electing Judge Nawaf Salam as Prime Minister.”
Gemayel explained that MP Ibrahim Mneimneh was the candidate for a segment of the "change MPs," while Makhzoumi was the opposition's candidate.
He added, “To win the battle, we needed the Democratic Gathering and the Free Patriotic Movement to support our candidate. After extensive discussions, we concluded that Judge Salam could be a unifying figure for everyone.”
On the possibility of foreign interference, Gemayel firmly asserted, “There was no external contact with anyone. The process was entirely the result of internal communications, and I testify to this with utmost sincerity.”
Gemayel expressed strong confidence in President Joseph Aoun and the designated Prime Minister, emphasizing the need to give them a chance to fulfill their mission of lifting Lebanon out of its deep crisis.
He noted, “This is not a routine process. Lebanon is emerging from 30 years of tutelage and a devastating war. Let’s give them the space to determine what is appropriate, whether through consultations or private meetings. What matters is facilitating their mission to steer the country away from wars, crises, and tensions.”
He concluded by calling for a positive outlook for the country, saying, “The Lebanese people deserve it."
