Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met with European Union Commissioner for the Mediterranean region, Dubravka Šuica, at the Baabda Palace, where discussions focused on financial assistance, political reforms, and security cooperation.
Following the meeting, Šuica announced that the European Commission had already allocated a €1 billion aid package for Lebanon, with an additional €500 million under consideration. However, she emphasized that the release of the extra funds would depend on key conditions, including the restructuring of Lebanon’s banking sector and reaching an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
“The European Commission had allocated a €1 billion package for Lebanon, and an additional €500 million will be earmarked, but this will depend on certain conditions, namely the restructuring of the banking sector and an agreement with the International Monetary Fund,” she stated.
Šuica reaffirmed the EU’s support for President Aoun and Lebanon’s newly formed government, underscoring Brussels’ commitment to political and economic stability in the crisis-hit country.
“This is my first visit to Lebanon, and the meeting with President Aoun was successful. Naturally, we discussed political transition, reforms, the ceasefire, and support for the army,” she said.
