An ancient sandstone sphinx with the head of a ram was discovered in Egypt by a team of archeologists.
The 3,000-year-old remains, including several unfinished sculptures, were found at an abandoned workshop that is believed to date back to the 18th Dynasty, during the reign of Amenhotep III, King Tut’s grandfather.
The ram-headed sphinx, known as a criosphinx, is a sculpture that measures roughly 5-meters long and 3.5 meters tall. It was unearthed at the ancient quarry site of Gebel el-Silsila near Aswan.
The team, including archaeologists from Sweden's Lund University and the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, said that the top half of the sphinx head has broken off and appears to have been lost to time.
Hundreds of stone fragments holding hieroglyphs and a carving of a coiled-up cobra that once crowned the sphinx were also discovered.
“During the sphinx excavations and placed up-side-down next to the large sculpture’s stomach, the team discovered a smaller practice piece of another sphinx, perhaps carved by an apprentice,” archaeologists explain, in a blog post.
