Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun welcomed the emerging U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding on Monday, saying he hoped the agreement would translate into concrete steps to halt military escalation in the region, including on Lebanese territory.
In an official statement, Aoun said he had “followed with interest” the announcement of the deal reached between Washington and Tehran, which reportedly includes commitments to end hostilities and reduce tensions across multiple regional fronts.
He highlighted what he described as the agreement’s recognition of Lebanon’s “specificity” and its acknowledgment that the country’s stability and security are an integral part of broader regional de-escalation efforts.
“The Lebanese people have borne heavy sacrifices and significant burdens in recent months,” Aoun said, referring in particular to communities that have suffered casualties, displacement, and widespread destruction of homes and livelihoods.
“They now look forward to these understandings being translated into practical steps that bring a definitive end to the cycle of violence and open the way to stability, security, recovery, and reconstruction.”
The president said Lebanon hoped the agreement would mark the beginning of a wider regional process aimed at strengthening stability, respecting national sovereignty, and protecting the rights of all peoples in the region.
He also expressed gratitude to the countries and actors involved in mediating the understanding, as well as those who worked to ensure Lebanon was included in efforts to de-escalate tensions and halt military activity across various fronts.
Aoun said this inclusion reflected an awareness of the scale of hardship endured by the Lebanese population in recent months amid continued instability.
“We appreciate the efforts of all those who contributed to this memorandum and those who ensured that Lebanon was part of the broader push to stop escalation and military operations,” he said.
Aoun added that Lebanon hopes the agreement will help pave the way for a more comprehensive regional settlement, one that would reinforce stability, uphold state sovereignty, and allow Lebanese citizens to focus on rebuilding their lives and restoring normal conditions under a secure state.
