Supreme Judicial Council Did Not Meet to Discuss Beirut Blast Investigations

The meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) did not take place due to lack of a legal quorum, requiring the presence of six out of the seven members.

The President of the SJC, Judge Souheil Abboud, left the Palace of Justice, refusing the insistence of members to hold a session without his consent.

Ghassan Oueidat, Habib Mezher, Elias Richa and Mireille Haddad are present in the meeting room, and are waiting for the arrival of their 2 colleagues, Afif Hakim and Dany Chebli, to ensure the quorum: this is unlikely to happen since Hakim is in solidarity with Abboud.

Thus, the quorum, requiring 6 members, will not be ensured.

The meeting convened by the outgoing Minister of Justice, Henry Khoury, has on its agenda only the port file and the fate of Judge Tarek Bitar.
