In a post marking the World Day of Peace celebrated by the Catholic Church on January 1, Kataeb MP Salim Sayegh called on Lebanese politicians to prioritize the aspirations of the nation’s youth, urging lawmakers to elect a president committed to a mission of peace and justice,
"On the occasion of the World Day of Peace, our youth are calling on us today to live with dignity. It is now up to us, as members of Parliament, to recognize and embrace this profound aspiration by electing a President of the Republic with a clear mission rooted in two pillars: peace and justice," Sayegh wrote on his X account.
Sayegh’s post accompanied an ICI Beyrouth article advocating for critical reforms in Lebanon’s political landscape, notably the necessity of disarming Hezbollah as a prerequisite for restoring normal political life. The article underscores that electing a president on January 9, whether successful or not, must be contingent on addressing the issue of Hezbollah’s autonomous military status.
The ICI Beyrouth opinion piece asserts that Hezbollah must relinquish its independent military capabilities to align with the principles of Lebanon’s sovereignty, as enshrined in UN Resolution 1701 and the Taef Agreement. It critiques the group's use of Lebanon as a "front" for its regional agenda, highlighting the incompatibility of Hezbollah's ideology with the tenets of a parliamentary democracy.
Drawing on the Iranian Constitution's emphasis on transnational Islamic unity, the article warns of the risks posed by Hezbollah's allegiance to Iran’s Supreme Leader under the doctrine of Wilayat al-Faqih. This system, it notes, undermines the separation of powers essential to Lebanon’s democratic framework.
