UNIFIL's Extension Session: International Approach Towards Hezbollah's Activities
Lebanon is engaged in a challenging diplomatic battle at the United Nations, aiming to convince the permanent members of the Security Council to adopt the former formula concerning the extension of the UNIFIL mission in southern Lebanon.
This formula emphasizes coordination with the Lebanese army during the patrols of the UN force.
The resolution that will be approved will serve as an indication of the international stance towards Hezbollah.
In reality, there is no unanimous position within the Security Council to condemn the practices of Hezbollah and its violations of Resolution 1701, due to the Russian and Chinese approach.
Washington is working to expand the mandate of UNIFIL.
A question arises about the role of France, which drafted the resolution. Will it be willing to address Hezbollah in the resolution, considering its negotiations with the Shiite duo to achieve a presidential compromise?
