The Lebanese Army announced Monday that it has taken custody of a second Hamas-affiliated suspect in connection with two recent rocket attacks targeting Israel, as military intelligence is pressing ahead with its investigation based on recommendations from Lebanon’s Higher Defense Council and government.
The suspect, identified only by his initials (Y.B.), was handed over to the Army’s Intelligence Directorate by Hamas, according to a military statement. He is believed to have been involved in the rocket launches on March 22 and 28 from southern Lebanon into northern Israel.
One day earlier, Hamas handed over a first suspect, identified by the initials (M.G.), to the Lebanese army near the entrance to the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in the southern city of Sidon.
A Lebanese security source told Al Arabiya that the Palestinian militant group is expected to surrender three additional suspects within the next 48 hours for their alleged roles in the rocket fires.
In a related judicial development, Government Commissioner to the Military Court, Judge Fadi Akiki, filed charges against nine individuals, most of them Palestinians. Five are currently in custody. All are affiliated with Hamas and face charges carrying potential sentences of up to 15 years of hard labor.
The suspects are accused of forming an armed group “with the intent to undermine the authority and prestige of the state,” firing rockets toward Israel on March 22 and 28, stockpiling medium and heavy weaponry, and preparing for further attacks that were never carried out “for reasons beyond their control.” They also face charges of illegally possessing firearms, explosives, and rockets.
The charges also include violations of Lebanese measures related to the enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel and bans unauthorized weapons in southern Lebanon.
Judicial sources said the investigation remains active. Army Intelligence is working to identify and detain other suspects.
