The UN special coordinator for Lebanon landed in Tehran on Monday for discussions about the need for Security Council resolutions to be fully implemented, including Resolution 1701, which called for the disarming of Iran-backed Hezbollah.
Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert began her visit to meet with senior Iranian officials, her office said. She has visited Israel multiple times, and Hennis-Plasschaert’s office said this was part of her ongoing consultations with regional and international stakeholders.
“Her discussions will focus on the critical need for positive developments in Lebanon, seen since the commencement of the Cessation of Hostilities on Nov. 27, 2024, to continue and for United Nations Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) to be fully implemented,” UNSCOL said.
Resolution 1701, which put an end to the July 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel, was the focus of the latest ceasefire between the two last year.
UNSCR 1701 calls for the complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, the retreat of Hezbollah fighters and weapons north of Litani and reaffirmed the need for previous resolutions – which included the need for Hezbollah to disarm and give up its weapons – to be implemented.
A ceasefire monitoring mechanism, headed by the US, has been in place since the ceasefire last November.
Although the deal had stipulated for Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon by Jan. 26, the US announced an extension last week.
The US said that a “short, temporary” ceasefire extension was needed to ensure that Hezbollah could not threaten the Lebanese people or its neighbors. The White House said it was pleased that the Israeli army had started withdrawing.
“President Trump is committed to ensuring Israeli citizens can safely return to their homes in northern Israel while also supporting President Aoun and the new Lebanese government,” a White House official previously told Al Arabiya English.
Lebanon elected the former Army commander, Joseph Aoun, as president on Jan. 9, followed by the designation of Nawaf Salam, an ICJ judge and key proponent of Resolution 1701 before that, to form a new government.
